Mildly Non-Projective Dependency Grammar

چکیده

Syntactic representations based on word-to-word dependencies have a long tradition in descriptive linguistics, and receive considerable interest in many computational applications. However, dependency syntax has remained somewhat of an island from a formal point of view, which hampers the exchange of resources and computational methods with other syntactic traditions. In this article, we present new results on the formal relationship between dependency syntax and phrase-structure syntax. To do so, we introduce a formalism in which abstract properties of a dependency grammar such as generative capacity and parsing complexity can be controlled by constraints on the non-projectivity of the analyses permitted by the grammar. This gives rise to an infinite hierarchy of mildly context-sensitive dependency grammars. The class of grammars at the lowest point of this hierarchy is restricted to projective analyses and equivalent to contextfree phrase-structure grammar. The class of grammars at the second-lowest point is equivalent to tree-adjoining grammar. In contrast to projective structures, the dependency analyses permitted by this class have a close to perfect coverage on practically relevant treebank data.

Dependency Parsing Schemata and Mildly Non-Projective Dependency Parsing

We introduce dependency parsing schemata, a formal framework based on Sikkel’s parsing schemata for constituency parsers, which can be used to describe, analyze, and compare dependency parsing algorithms. We use this framework to describe several well-known projective and non-projective dependency parsers, build correctness proofs, and establish formal relationships between them. We then use th...

A Hierarchy of Mildly Context-Sensitive Dependency Grammars

The paper presents Colored Multiplanar Link Grammars (CMLG). These grammars are reducible to extended right-linear S-grammars (Wartena 2001) where the storage type S is a concatenation of c pushdowns. The number of colors available in these grammars induces a hierarchy of Classes of CMLGs. By fixing also another parameter in CMLGs, namely the bound t for non-projectivity depth, we get c-Colored...

Treebank Grammar Techniques for Non-Projective Dependency Parsing

An open problem in dependency parsing is the accurate and efficient treatment of non-projective structures. We propose to attack this problem using chart-parsing algorithms developed for mildly contextsensitive grammar formalisms. In this paper, we provide two key tools for this approach. First, we show how to reduce nonprojective dependency parsing to parsing with Linear Context-Free Rewriting...

Computational Aspects of Non-Projective Dependency Grammars

Lexicalised Configuration Grammars (lcg) is a declarative framework for non-projective dependency grammars. Lexical entries in lcg are local well-formedness conditions for drawings (trees equipped with a total order). The framework is powerful enough to encode a large number of existing grammar formalisms declaratively. The expressivity of lcg, however, comes at the cost of np-complete word pro...

Parsing Mildly Non-Projective Dependency Structures

We present novel parsing algorithms for several sets of mildly non-projective dependency structures. First, we define a parser for well-nested structures of gap degree at most 1, with the same complexity as the best existing parsers for constituency formalisms of equivalent generative power. We then extend this algorithm to handle all well-nested structures with gap degree bounded by any consta...
